At a glance

Three things to notice in this field

Tap an observation below — or a section heading further down — to hold that part in the figure above.

This pattern traces a movement from expression, into service and restoration, and eventually toward making room for everything experience has changed. Learning is what connects those stages: what happens along the way has to change how the next step is taken. The larger story is one of direction emerging from what has been expressed, cared for, learned from, and brought together.

One bridge

A Bridge reads how one Root meets another, and what has to be crossed between them.

Vocation → Power

HEAL —[LEARN / Contained]→ INTEGRATE

HEAL in Vocation meets INTEGRATE in Power. The crossing between them moves through LEARN (Phoenix Root · Seal 9), in a Contained posture.

What happens when my public function begins generating influence, consequence, or potency?

In public life

Three documented moments, each separately sourced. The Field Scribe lens is shown next to a fact, never as its cause or explanation.

  1. 1974 onward

    Service becomes organized work

In 1974, Ram Dass created the Hanuman Foundation. Its projects included spiritual programs for incarcerated people and work supporting awareness and compassion around dying; he later also helped establish the Seva Foundation.

  2. 1997

Experience changes the form of participation

In February 1997, Ram Dass suffered a near-fatal stroke that left him partially paralyzed and with expressive aphasia. He later resumed teaching, writing and sharing his work in altered forms.

  3. Post-stroke years

The changed life enters the teaching

After the stroke, Ram Dass continued writing and teaching, later leading retreats from Maui and teaching through remote and online formats. His post-stroke works included Still Here, Be Love Now, Polishing the Mirror and Walking Each Other Home.

Signature

This field is oriented toward direction.

LEAD
Pillar of Vision · Seal 10

A field organised this way engages the question of where things are going, and often sees possible directions before they are fully formed.

The deeper field

Under pressure, the same capacities can narrow into familiar rules. Recode asks what another response might sound like.

When the loop takes over
If I stay armoured, consequence cannot reach me.
A line to return to
I can stand present in what is true here without armouring against consequence.

These are lines this field could return to — symbolic pattern offered as an invitation to inquiry, never a verdict and never a claim about this person's inner life. A life is always larger than the map.
